The Pena Palace (Palacio Nacional da Pena) in Sintra may just remind you of Disneyland in the way it combines decorative styles. The palace's architect, Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege, was of German origin and had traveled through Asia, Africa, and of course, Portugal. Because of this multitude of influences, the palace is a mishmash of Romantic, Renaissance, Manueline, and Moorish style. 

The site, which once held a monastery, was purchased by King Ferdinand II in the 1830s, he commissioned the monastery's restoration and transformed into a private palace. When you visit, you can see for yourself why the king chose this site. The surrounding Park of Pena contains exotic plant life, including over 500 species of trees. The stunning view stretches over the Sintra Region and the western coastline, and stretches all the way to the city of Lisbon below.

- There is a paid transfer service available to bring guests from the park entrance to the palace. The service runs every 15 minutes and is wheelchair accessible.
